May 3 is celebrated as “Soka Gakkai Day,” a significant occasion in the history of the Soka Gakkai that marks important milestones in its development. On this day in 1951, Josei Toda was inaugurated as the second president, ushering in a new era of growth and determination. Nearly a decade later, on May 3, 1960, Daisaku Ikeda became the third president, further advancing the organization’s mission on a global scale.
At the time of Toda’s leadership, the organization had only a small membership, yet he set a bold vision for expansion rooted in the philosophy of kosen-rufu—the pursuit of peace through the empowerment of individuals. His conviction inspired many to take action, laying a strong foundation for future development. Ikeda carried this spirit forward, emphasizing peace, culture, and education, and guiding the movement into an era of international outreach.
May 3 also holds special meaning as “Soka Gakkai Mother’s Day,” honoring the invaluable contributions of women, whose dedication and efforts have played a central role in the organization’s growth and community spirit.
Today, this day is commemorated worldwide through gatherings and meetings, where members reflect on the shared vow of mentor and disciple. It serves as a moment to renew determination, strengthen unity, and recommit to creating a more peaceful and compassionate society.
