Jai Japan - #2 - Live in Japan...or may be not?

Written and shared by Mia Horiguchi San. I’ve noticed something interesting after years of living in Japan and meeting people from all over the world.

Many of my Asian classmates study Japanese very seriously. They push themselves, memorizing kanji, practicing keigo, trying to sound as natural as possible. When you ask why, the answer is often simple: they don’t want to go back. For many of them, the ultimate goal is clear—getting PR (permanent residency) and building a stable life here.

Japan isn’t just a temporary stop. It’s a long-term plan. A place for better opportunities, safety, and a fresh start. So learning Japanese isn’t optional, it’s necessary. It’s the key to staying.

But when I look at many of my Western classmates, the mindset often feels different. Of course, some are very dedicated, but many are more relaxed about the language. They learn enough to live, work, and enjoy Japan, but they don’t always feel the same pressure to fully integrate. If one day they feel they’ve had enough, they’re open to moving somewhere else.

It’s not about who is more hardworking.

It’s about urgency and options.

For many Asians, going back home might mean fewer opportunities or a life they’ve already chosen to leave behind. So they go all in, language, career, long-term visa, PR.

For many Westerners, home is still a strong safety net. A place with stability, opportunities, and familiarity. So Japan becomes one chapter of life, not necessarily the final destination.

And honestly, neither is right or wrong.

It just reminds me, behind every person learning Japanese, there’s a deeper story.Some are learning to stay. Some are learning to experience.
