Jai Japan - #8 - "BLACK COMPANY" in JAPAN

A few days ago, I was chatting with a foreign friend here in Japan.
He looked exhausted… like really exhausted.
I asked him, “忙しいの?” (Busy?)
He laughed and said, “Not busy… just working in a black company.”
That word again. ブラック企業.
If you’ve lived in Japan long enough, you’ve probably heard it.
At first, I didn’t understand it either.
Japan is known for discipline, responsibility, and hard work… so what’s the difference?
But after hearing more stories, I realized something important.
A “black company” isn’t just about working hard.
It’s about being trapped in a system where you can’t say no.
Here are some common signs people quietly share:
Overtime is “normal”… but not always paid
You feel guilty leaving on time
Taking leave feels like doing something wrong
Bosses use pressure instead of leadership
High staff turnover, but no one talks about it
You’re always tired… but everyone pretends it’s fine
My friend told me this:
“One day I missed the last train and had to sleep at the office.
The next morning, nobody asked if I was okay…
We laughed… but honestly, it wasn’t funny.
The scary part?
From the outside, everything looks normal. Clean office, polite people, structured system.
But inside… some people are slowly burning out.
Of course, not all companies in Japan are like this.
There are many amazing workplaces that truly care about their staff. But I think this is something especially foreigners should understand. Because sometimes, we feel we must endure more… just to “fit in.”
So if you’re working in Japan, here’s a gentle reminder:
Working hard is respected
But your health matters more
And it’s okay to question what doesn’t feel right
Have you ever experienced or heard of a ブラック企業 story?
