Jai Japan - #9 - Why Do So Many Women in Japan Dream of Becoming a Housewife?
Why Do So Many Women in Japan Dream of Becoming a Housewife?
Recently I asked a few Japanese friends…
even some of my kids’ friends:
“What’s your dream for the future?”
And surprisingly, many girls still say:
“I want to be a housewife.”
Not influencer.
Not CEO.
Not pilot.
Housewife.
At first I was shocked — in 2026? Really?
But after living in Japan long enough, I started to understand the deeper reasons behind this dream.
Here are some possible reasons
1. Housewife = stability + peace
Many Japanese women grow up seeing their mothers create a calm, organized home.
In a society with pressure, rules, and long working hours,
home feels like a safe space.
2. Work culture is still VERY tough
Japanese office culture can be exhausting:
long hours, overtime, expectations to “read the air,” pressure from seniors.
Some girls see their fathers working past 9pm every day…
and think: “I don’t want that life.”
3. Culturally, moms are superheroes
In Japan, moms manage:
school forms, PTA, homework, bento, club activities, schedules, community tasks…
It’s respected, important, and seen as a full-time job.
4. Social messaging still encourages it
Books, TV, school events —
they often show the “ideal family” with a hardworking dad
and a gentle, organized mother at home.
Kids absorb this unconsciously.
5. Many women actually enjoy homemaking
Cooking seasonal meals, keeping a clean home, raising polite kids,
there is pride and beauty in this role. Japanese culture places value on care, detail, and harmony.
6. And yes… living cost + low salary plays a part
Even though most households now need two incomes,
many women say:
“If I could choose freely, I’d still stay home.”
Not because they lack ambition —
but because they want a simple, peaceful life.
And honestly?
There’s nothing wrong with dreaming of being a housewife.
There’s also nothing wrong with dreaming of having a career.
In the end…everyone just wants a life that feels meaningful and comfortable for them.
